The movie version of The Secret combines documentary stylings and self-help dialogue to create an impressive tableau. The movie was put together by Prime Time Productions and loosely based on a book called The Science of Getting Rich, which was originally released way back in 1910. Thanks to mass media exposure, the film has attracted an incredible amount of press coverage – some positive, some critical. You can find The Secret streamed online and on DVD.

All told, nearly six million copies of the book based on the movie have been printed and distributed to readers across the world. The central philosophy of The Secret is that human behavior is guided by something called “The Law of Attraction.” According to The Secret’s lore, this law was originally enshrined in ancient wisdom and lost over the centuries (and/or hidden by powerful people who did not want this “secret” revealed).

The Secret encourages people to use visualization techniques to achieve goals. There are three steps to the process. The first step is “to ask”: individuals need to ask the universe for positive results — at work, with relationships, with regard to spiritual and physical health, and so on. According to advocates of this idea, the more clearly and articulately one can visualize a desired result, the easier it is to achieve.

The second step is to “believe.” You must develop a deep belief that the outcome you want to occur will actually happen. You need to focus your thinking in a positive, focused direction to bend the universe to your will.

The third stage of the process is to “receive.” This stage involves listening to signs from the universe that you are going in the right direction. Intuitions, insights, déjà vu, and other flashes of inspiration can help direct your path during this stage.

The makers of The Secret interviewed over two dozen “experts” in a variety of fields, including life coaching, quantum physics, and Feng Shui. Unsurprisingly, most of the individuals who appeared in the film either implicitly or explicitly expressed high regard for the assumptions of the theory. Although high-profile early advocates of The Secret, such as Ellen Degeneres and Oprah Winfrey, did not appear in the film, the publicity that these talk show hosts later bequeathed on the The Secret no doubt helped the movie’s sales figures.

The producers of the film — including Rhonda Byrne and Paul Harrington — invested personal funds to get the project off the ground. They applied the lessons of their own teachings to the production of the movie. According to Byrne, they utilized the Law of Attraction to plan every stage of the movie, including budgeting and logistics.

At first, the film did not receive wide reception or good reviews from critics. It ran one time on Australia’s Channel 9 and earned mediocre ratings. However, after being touted on Oprah in 2007, the film won the attention of a vast audience. It quickly topped DVD charts, and the creators smartly developed a book version of the movie to capitalize on the film’s success. The book rocketed to the top of the best seller lists.

In the months that followed the publicity storm, the film’s concepts were mulled over by cynics and believers alike. Saturday Night Live, Boston Legal, and a cartoon called The Venture Brothers all satirized The Secret. Following the success of the film, the producers were invited onto an array of talk shows, including Larry King Live, The Today Show, Nightline, the Montel Williams Show, and, of course, Opera and Friends.

Many in both the secular and religious press lambasted The Secret for “blaming” unfortunates for their bad fates and for making specious claims about how the mind can influence the health of the body. That said, for all the agitation over some of the claims, the notion that visualization of goals can lead more rapidly to their achievement has wide support among social psychologists.

Other critics point out that The Secret’s focus on the acquisition of wealth, power, and material goods is at odds with a proper moral value system. Regardless of the ultimate assessment of the film, fans of The Secret are numerous, and are influencing our cultural evolution by suggesting interesting new ways of viewing the American Dream.

Don’t.  Remember the house of cards business.  Take one out and the whole house crashes.  That’s what will happen in the Suzie Ormand world. We all know Suzie’s hothouse examples, her earnest ideas and her pop financial expertise.  Ormand recommended on Larry King’s television show on September 29 that we move our money into safe places, like insured bank accounts.  I wonder how many of us have checked her financial status to see if she made all the right moves.  This isn’t a crystal ball economy where we can see easy answers.

Everyone has the answer to the financial crisis these days, from the guy at the donut shop to the friend at church.  That’s particularly true of those not in the stock market.  They seem to have the most answers.  It’s rather like the fat guy who can tell us everything we need to know to lose weight.  I think that’s the wrong way to go.  I think what we need to do is chill.

Yes, chill, as in simmer down.  If any one of us really knew what to do, the government would want to send for us; and the guy with the right answer would win the sweepstakes.  Maybe the guy ought to get a percentage of the $700 billion.  The problem is that financial problems that can affect the whole world have no easy answers, so to give them to the neighbor, to each other or to yourself in the mirror will help discharge feelings, but you don’t have the answer, and neither do I.  Sadly enough, I suspect those guys in Washington don’t either.

So now that if we can simmer down we can dialogue about options, which are mostly our own.  We won’t be able to fix what’s “out there,” but we can begin to fix what’s close up and personal, and that’s what we are doing, have done and can do.

Practically speaking, the spending spree should be over, that is the over-spending-live-beyond-your-means way that got us into this fix.  The blame goes all around, and we should all share it, every last knuckleheaded, well-meaning, usually good-kind-of-fellow, because we did it.  We overspent, over-craved, and overdrove, individually and collectively, and now like the car on the date when you have to get the girl home or her father will get you, we’re in big trouble.

My recommendation:  we should all chill.  Our neighbor is no more to blame than you and I are.  We share it.  Maybe we voted wrong, or right, or didn’t.  Maybe we bought too much, too little, or failed to plan.  Maybe we want an excuse to put responsibility and blame on others to relieve our own guilt.  But whatever is going on:  chill is what we all need to do.  That means stand back, take an inventory of your mistakes and calmly, surely and carefully, go about fixing them.  This isn’t a time to take all of our sheckles and put them under the mattress now because every dollar that is taken out like that will help bring down the cards.

Now let’s go on with the rest of our lives, remembering as Scarlett O’Hara said in Gone with the Wind, “Tomorrow is another day.”

Suzanne Marie Mahoney was born in San Bruno, California, on 16 October 1946; she is one of four children. In 1986, she wrote an autobiography entitled Keeping Secrets, in which detailed the physical abuse she suffered at the hands of her father as a child, which was later made into a TV movie.

As a child she was diagnosed as having dyslexia and was considered a poor academic student. She did, however, perform well in the theatre programme at the school, eventually, attending college with a music scholarship.

Unfortunately, after a short time at college, she became pregnant and married her boyfriend Bruce Somers, the marriage ended in 1967 after two years. As a single mother trying to make ends meet Suzanne used her looks to take up modelling, she was quickly snapped up by a game show hosted by Alan Hamel, who later became her second husband.

During the early 70s, she found minor roles in TV shows and movies. Eventually, winning the role that would make her a star, as the bubbly blonde Chrissy on the hit TV comedy show Three’s Company opposite John Ritter. She has stated in the past that the character was based on the wife of famous entertainer, **** Clark.

She starred in the show for four seasons, then was apparently ‘let go’ after asking for a raise. During the early 80s she performed on stage in Las Vegas. She later took the role of Carol Foster, this time, playing opposite Patrick Duffy in the TV series Step by Step. She later went on to host the long-running Candid Camera.

At the beginning of the 90s, he became famous as the scantily clad Thigh Master workout girl in a series of well remembered commercials for the leg exerciser.

Since then, she has gone to more serious work, founding the Suzanne Somers Institute for the Effects of Addictions on the Family. She also, she appeared before the U.S. Senate Committee who at the time were planning legislation regarding addiction and family abuse.

She went on to give lectures on the subject, all over the United States. In addition, was given a Humanitarian Award from the National Counsel on Alcoholism, she is also won the prestigious President’s Award from the National Association of American Drug Counselors. As well as several other commendations for her work.

Here are some interesting facts about Suzanne’s life, she reached cult status, playing the mysterious blonde driving a Thunderbird, and being pursued by Richard Dreyfuss in the 1972 cult phenomena American Graffiti.

Because of her dyslexia, she had to paint one shoe red to be able to learn dance numbers for her Vegas show. After originally winning the role of Jill Munroe in “Charlie’s Angels”, she was replaced before shooting began, by Farrah Fawcett.

After losing the role, she hired, Farrah’s manager to do for her what he had done a Farrah. In 2001 while being interviewed on the hit show Larry King Live, she announced that she was suffering from ****** cancer.

In the opening credits for “Three’s Company”, the brunette walking along the beach is Suzanne wearing a wig. In 1986, she became Las Vegas, female entertainer of the year.

She and Joyce DeWitt did not speak for 20 years after the end of Three’s Company.

She was not the first actors hired play Chrissy; she was in fact, the fourth, women, given the role.

Suzann currently promotes her own line of diet and other products with her husband Alan Hamel.
